What is it?
A solid-state device that detects lightning and provides automatic equipment protection.
Why do I need it?
It has been proven that equipment has a risk of being damaged by lightning when only protected by conventional equipment protection devices, such as passive surge suppressors, etc. This is because your equipment is connected to all the external wiring when lightning is occurring.
How does it work?
By detecting the presence of lightning, when it is still a safe distance away and automatically switching your equipment to a standby power source (isolating it from the AC wiring). This means your equipment remains fully functional, but is disconnected from the power company wiring that typically brings the lightning damage right to your equipment. Disconnect time is user-selectable from 1 to 20 minutes. The same is true for telephone, coax, data, etc. wiring connected to your equipment. When lightning is detected, the Equipment Protection System does the same thing as if you disconnected the phone line, coax, etc for ½ of a second, each time there was a close lightning strike (typically within 1 mile). This is short enough to be transparent to equipment operation but long enough to give the lightning strike time to dissipate while your equipment is electrically disconnected. When the storm moves a safe distance away or the lightning subsides, the Equipment Protection System automatically resets and normal equipment operation and connections are restored.
The Model 1800 also has the feature of Power Quality Monitoring. This unit continuously monitors the AC source for high/low voltage and has a real-time bar graph display that lets you see power line noise or disturbances. Anomalies are indicated by visual & audible means and the unit has connections to interface with remote reporting/monitoring equipment.
The Model 1000 & 1800 automatically disconnect from the AC Power source when lightning is detected and are powered by an internal battery that is continuously charged.
What maintenance does it require?
The Model 1000 & 1800 standby battery should be replaced every 3 years. Verifying the operation of all 3 Equipment Protection Systems is as simple as pushing a button.
How big is it?
Model 500- 5” X 7” X 3”, wall or desk mount. Weight is 5 pounds.
Model 1000- 12” X 10” X 4”, wall-mount. Weight is 10 pounds.
Model 1800- 14.5” X 12.5” X 4.5”, desk mount. Weight is 15 pounds.
What about warranty?
Industry standard, one year limited material & workmanship warranty. Unlimited toll-free customer support available by phone or email 8-5 CST, M-F.
